The Hants and Dorset Championship Rowing Season got off to a belated start after last week’s cancellation of Bournemouth Regatta with Southampton based crews winning ten of the fifteen Championship Points on offer at Ryde Regatta on Saturday. Itchen Imperial set the standard in both the Men’s and Ladies Senior Fours Events winning by 1 ½ and 2 lengths respectively on very lively water that proved to be a severe test for some coxswains and Scullers.

Southampton’s Tom Standley, Andrew Broadbent, Sam Lawrence, James Maddocks (Stk) Roger Hames (Cox) got off to a good start at Ryde in the Men’s Novice Fours as did the Itchen Imperial Novice Ladies K. Orouke, K. Egan, H. Moot, I. Ingliss (Stk) by winning their fiercely contested Sections which saw 19 crews Men’s Crew and 14 Ladies Crews battle their way through two heats before winning their respective six boat finals by 2 lengths.

BTC‘s Junior Senior Men had an easy win over Southampton in a disappointing two boat race, but it was the BTC Junior Ladies Catherine Hume, Ellie Penketh, Rosie Upstill-Goddard, Sophie Maxwell (Stk) Cloe Weaver (Cox) who stole the show at Ryde, coming from behind to win by ½ length with Christchurch second and Coalporters third and making it a double with a 3 ½ lengths win over Coalporters and Southampton at Shanklin on Sunday. Tom Foad the Itchen Imperial Junior Sculler was the only other double winner, winning his two events by a distance at both regattas.

Many crews found the much improve water conditions at Shanklin more to their liking with Christchurch reversing the order in the Men’s Senior Fours to win by 2 ½ lengths from Itchen and Ryde Senior Ladies romped home by a distance, whilst BTC’s Richard Hume reversed the order in the Men’s Senior Scull to gain a 3 lengths victory over C Schreiber of Lymington.
