Ryde and Shanklin

The Hants and Dorset Championship Rowing Season got off to a belated start after last week’s cancellation of Bournemouth Regatta with Southampton based crews winning ten of the fifteen Championship Points on offer at Ryde Regatta on Saturday. Itchen Imperial set the standard in both the Men’s and Ladies Senior Fours Events winning by 1 ½ and 2 lengths respectively on very lively water that proved to be a severe test for some coxswains and Scullers.

Itchen Imperial

Itchen Imperial’s Men’s Senior Four P Joyce, L Williams, M Wardell, T Foad Robin McGregor Ritchie (Cox) showed a touch of class at their Clubs Annual Regatta on Saturday to make it two out of three wins to lead this years Hants and Dorset Senior Championship. With a flawless display as they powered from their turning buoy 1 ½ lengths clear of main challengerChristchurch they increased that to by a further length as they crossed the finishing line. More success for Wardell and Williams in the Senior Pairs as they moved ahead of Lymington in the Championship.

Another hard fought for Senior Championship Point for Itchen Imperial at Woolston Regatta on Saturday. Rowed in near perfect conditions, the race was not without incident however. BTC’s Junior Senior Four, rowing as a late entry trying their hand at senior rowing, dashed from the start to lead comfortably as the crew settled into their stride, only to clash with Southampton as they came away from their turn as Southampton swung in, causing Richard Hume rowing at three in the BTC boat to be thrown out and leaving Southampton Cox, Emma Coffin concussed with a blow to the head.

Itchen Imperial Senior Four, drawn to face London RC “A” in the first round of this year’s Henley Royal Regatta Wyfold Challenge Cup after successfully qualifying on Friday, put in another measured performance as they rounded their turning buoys level with BTC and Christchurch at Swanage on Saturday, BTC must have thought they were in with a chance of regaining past glory as they moved one length ahead but, with 200 mtrs remaining, Itchen raised their rate to come level and neither BTC nor Christchurch could stay with them as they eased away  to win by 2 lengths, with BTC in second place just a canvas ahead of Christchurch.
